COPYRIGHT CAUTION & WARNING!

A COPYRIGHT REMINDER & WARNING!

Dear Friends,

A lot of people/public may not be aware of these matters and I feel that these need to be highlighted and enforced.

No artist is ever interested in spawning copycats or promoting imitators of their art, whether they are singers, actors or painters. This includes my father Talat Mahmood. This is the very basis of why the Copyright Act was created ( to put this breed of copycats in jail ! )  Making money/profits from the works of these artists is only by/for legal copyright owners of their works.

Attached below are press clips from DNA Newspaper highlighting a copyright case filed and won by Poet Kavi Pradeep's daughter against an organiser who was trying to make a quick buck using her father's name to promote the show and from TIMES OF INDIA Newspaper where the Judge indicted the Roshans in a Rs.2 Crore case for copying Ram Sampat's music without taking the necessary copyright permissions from him.  Another recent copyright case I recall is the one filed and won by Producer/ Director Kamaal Amrohi's son Tajdar Amrohi, against Sa Re Ga Ma music company and Mira Nair over the use of his song. Also, please don't forget the US $2 million copyright case filed and won by music director Bhappi Lahiri against a US Pop band singing his song without permissions. Copyright laws are very much in place and the Court's/Police have no hesitation in enforcing them!

Thus, nobody can stand on stage/TV and try to impersonate as 'TALAT MAHMOOD' either by singing his songs and/or copying his voice/singing style, as these are copyright to Talat Mahmood.

Artistes have slogged for decades to get to the heights that they reached and it is our duty to protect their rights/legacy. I know that you have the deepest of respect and regards for my father and have his best interest at heart and I know that you will appreciate my stance.

We have no problems with any Talat fan singing his favorite singer's song in his own house or whilst entertaining some friends over a barbeque evening. But when con men get up on Stage/TV and try to fool the public by impersonating as TALAT MAHMOOD, then they are staring down the wrong side of the law!

Please remember that time is not of the essence here and if you have committed the crime the law can catch up with you many years later too!

Regards,

Khalid
